In Africa, the state of healthcare is fragile, if not critical. A severe shortage of trained nurses and midwives means the average hospital has one nurse looking after 40 patients. So if there's no family on hand to wash, feed and medicate, patients are most likely to die. Yet for £220 a year, hospitals could afford to employ nursing assistants to care for patients. Not much when you think what it achieves.
